TEEN SEX AND THE LAW
.
Topeka, Kansas April 2, 2008: Why the laws are out of touch with reality and human nature. Laws designed to deter teens from having sex are not reaching their goal, however they are creating a new and ever expanding class of criminals with lifelong consequences far more harsh than the consequences of consensual sex.. Despite specific warnings from prosecutors, the 15-year-old Ohio girl who was arrested last week and accused of sending nude pictures of herself to classmates probably doubted that she could ultimately be forced to register as a sex offender under state law, psychologists and Internet experts say.
More than likely, they suggest, she was only after a sliver of notoriety, the product of a culture where pornography has gone mainstream and fame can be had in an instant by simply distributing a sexually explicit video with a cell phone or on the Internet.
"They think they're going to get attention -- that it makes them stars of their own reality show," Internet privacy and piracy lawyer Parry Aftab said of the growing number of U.S. teenagers who publish sexual images of themselves online.
"They don't understand the consequences," said Aftab, an ABC News consultant. "They don't think about where that video is going to go, or how long it's going to be on the Internet and the 50-year-old who is going to be drooling over it."

THE FACTS: WHETHER PARENTS OR THE “LEGISLATIVE MORALITY POLICE” LIKE IT More than half of 15- to 19-year-olds are doing it, according to a groundbreaking study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Among teens, oral sex is often viewed so casually that it needn't even occur within the confines of a relationship. Some teens say it can take place at parties, possibly with multiple partners. But they say the more likely scenario is oral sex within an existing relationship. .
David Walsh, a psychologist and author of the teen-behavior book Why Do They Act That Way?, says the brain is wired to develop intense physical and emotional attraction during the teenage years as part of the maturing process. .

Now enter sex offender laws. In particular we’re going to focus on the state of Kansas. A stroll through the Kansas State Registry is nothing short of shocking and demonstrates unequivocally just how far out of control this country has become regarding sex. Just by picking letters at random up come the poor young faces of hundreds - if not thousands of children and teens required to register as sex offenders, sometimes for life.
,
How could this be?
.
Much of the responsibility for this problem lies with Kansas Attorney General Phil Kline. According to the book “The war On Sex” by Dr. Marty Klein PhD., - The Kansas Attorney General in his “war on teen sex” made some dramatic restrictions on contraceptive availability to teenagers. Demanding that that doctors, nurses, counselors, and all other care providers report, AS ABUSE, any sexual interaction between teens under 16, even when it’s consenting and there is neither injury or complaint. His next target, a big one, is abortion clinics.
.
So, if a teenage girl seeking birth control pills to prevent pregnancy a report must inevitably be filed. Attorney General Kline has made it more dangerous than ever to be a teenager in the state of Kansas. The tragedy is that these unsuspecting teens don’t know the laws, aren’t taught them in school as part of their education, and are therefore risking their futures, their dreams, and their goals without even knowing it. Given the statistics above it is obvious that teens are having and will have sex. Coupled with the fact that children are reaching puberty and maturing earlier and earlier only makes this problem exponentially dire. See my article here.
. We have the death penalty in many states for those who commit murder, yet people still commit murder. Likewise, we have laws against drunk driving, but that doesn’t stop tens of thousands of people from getting behind the wheel each and every day after a few drinks. We had "Prohibition" which outlawed the sale of alcohol, but that still didn't stop people from drinking, they simply went underground. What makes Kansas Attorney General think that criminalizing consensual teen sex and putting them on the sex offender registry is going to have any more of deterrent effect, especially when these youths aren’t even aware of the laws? Add in the fact that these teens are being denied access to not only contraception, but also to basic sexual health information that may even save their lives and then what have you got? .
Personally, I don’t think he (Attorney General Kline) thinks at ALL and he definitely does NOT care about helping kids. If he did, he’d quit using them as stepping stones for his political career and look for realistic approaches to what he and the "Morality Police" deem as a horrible social problem. This leaves us as Americans with two options; we either allow this sort of legislative morality policing to continue, to the detriment of our children, perhaps even your child one day – or – we stand up and start speaking out against this atrocity and blatant abuse of power. Don’t wait until it is your son or daughter on the registry, because by then it will be too late for you and your child.
