Understanding the Ramifications of The Adam Walsh Act (AWA)

The Adam Walsh Act was passed and signed into law on July 27, 2006. States have been given three years to substantially comply with it's mandates. The bostondefender.com website has done an outstanding job of breaking down the issues and impact surrounding this legislation in easy to understand terms. I urge anyone who will be affected by this act including defense attorney's to examine it thoroughly. It does a wonderful job of pointing out weaknesses as well as potential legal challenges. With the continual addition and alteration of registration requirements and restrictions, usually applied retroactively to all registrants, how does this differ from "supervised release" such as probation or parole? The majority of registrants haven't been under any sort of supervised release (ie. probation) in many cases  for decades and have been law abiding citizens like everyone else. At what point, if any,  will the United States supreme court appropriately deem these laws as punitive?
